Archery Equipment Review:Primos Buck Roar Deer Call

Review: Primos Buck Roar Deer Call
by Brian Wensel-Dewclaw Staff Shooter

The Primos Buck Roar Deer Call was evaluated during a two-week whitetail-hunting trip to Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois with weather conditions that ranged from clear and sunny to torrential downpours.  We were in the woods from sunrise to sunset and really put our equipment to the test.  The weather conditions were at times, intense, and for a period of 4 days we were hunting in steady rain.  Additionally, I have used this call on many whitetail hunts over the past few hunting seasons; effectively calling in both bucks and does with ease.

Design and Function:  Primos Buck Roar Deer Call Review
The Buck Roar Deer Call is designed as a multi-purpose deer call with an easily adjustable reed that ranges from the deep sound of a trophy buck to the high pitched tone of a young, yearling doe.  Additionally, this call has a tube mounted above the primary grunt tube that is designed for use as a snort-wheeze call, an elastic strap that can be used to mount the call on the hunters arm, making it virtually hands free, and a small compass…just in case.

The design was well thought out and was kept as simple as possible, without sacrificing functionality or performance.  It can be easily disassembled for care and cleaning in a matter of seconds and then put back together just as fast.  Likewise, if the hunter needs to change the adjustment on the reed from a mature buck to a doe it can be done both quickly and quietly.

Aesthetics:
I’m not sure how important the aesthetics of a grunt call is, but this call has a sleek design and is deep green and black in color.  It’s actually a good-looking call and not too big and bulky, considering the multiple functions it provides.

Fit and Finish:
As mentioned above, this call is not very large and is a well-built, durable piece of gear.  It fits well in your hands and can easily be stored in the pocket of a safety vest or even a cargo pocket on the leg of a scent loc suit.  The deep green and black plastic finish adds to the sleek design. The elastic armband, although a great concept, seems to be more trouble than it is truly worth.  Since the is compact, I prefer to keep the call in the pocket of my Hunters Safety System vest.  I found that having the call strapped to my arm was actually a distraction.  However, the elastic armband did fit snugly on my arm as advertised.

Primos Buck Roar Deer call Review-ArmEase of Use:
This Primos Buck Roar call comes with a mini-DVD that provides instructions on how to use the grunt call and the snort-wheeze call, and after a few quick lessons this call is extremely easy to use.  Although the armband does secure the call to the hunters arm, using the call in this hands free position is not as easy as it may initially appear.  I found it much easier to just pull the call out of my pocket and use it like any other call.

Performance:

I’ve used many grunt calls over the years and the Buck Roar is truly the most realistic call I have ever used, hands down!  The call transitions through multiple tones, from the deep, rich tone of a trophy buck to the higher pitch tone of a young doe bleat; they can all be done effectively on this call.  The call does not resonate a plastic sound like some calls tend to do.  The sounds that resonate from the sound chamber are amazingly rich and realistic.

I mentioned how easy this call can be disassembled and reassembled for cleaning purposes.  This feature came in handy quite often during the testing period.  Because of the many days of heavy rains and bad weather we experienced during testing, this call was put through the paces.  Dirt and water frequently entered the call and at no point did this call stop performing; a problem that I have experienced in the past with many other top deer calls.

Summary
Primos Buckroar Deer Call Review-Scorecard
Design and Function:  Excellent!  A well thought out design resulted in a compact, durable, and extremely functional deer call.
Aesthetics: The calls sleek design and deep green and black components are pleasing to the eye.  This truly is an aesthetically superior deer call.
Fit and Finish:  The flat, deep green and black colors make this call blend into your surroundings.  The armband does its job and holds the call snugly in place, if you choose to utilize this feature.
Ease of Use: As a call, it can be quickly adjusted for multiple call tones or for care and cleaning.  Not overly complex at all.  My only complaint would be the slight difficulty using the call/armband feature.
Performance:  Unmatched by competitors!  This call flat out performs, and performs well!  It is the most realistic call I have ever used and will always be in my pocket while in the whitetail woods!

Overall, I will not hesitate to recommend this call to fellow friends and hunters.  It is an extremely easy to use call, that produce rich, realistic tones, and is the most durable and reliable call I’ve ever used.  Top-notch product! If it weren’t for the armband, I would rate this a perfect 5.0!!
